New York State Lobby Day Have your voice heard...
Join us at the State Capitol to advocate for state public policy issues that will help fight heart disease and stroke.
Lobby Day will be held at the New York State Capitol in Albany, New York on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
This year we will be advocating for:
CPR Training in Schools: Nearly 90% of cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital. American Heart Association volunteers will be advocating for legislation to provide all students the opportunity to learn this life saving skill before graduation.
Newborn Screening for Heart Defects: Some babies come into the world with congenital heart defects. We could potentially save these tiny lives by screening newborns for heart defects before being discharged from the hospital. AHA will be advocating for all these babies to be tested for heart disease before leaving the hospital using a simple, low-cost test, called pulse oximetry.

In 2012 we made great progress. The CPR in schools bill even passed the state Senate. With a new legislative session just starting, we will see a new bill introduced shortly.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY?
- Go to our NYS facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/#!/americanheartnewyork for updates on CPR and cardiovascular health. And search for your state legislators and post on their facebook pages (letters, media articles highlighting CPR etc).
- Know of a school that has a successful CPR program? Let us know.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Just remember to add your own personal touch as this will help get your letter printed.
- Contact your local school district to encourage them to incorporate CPR training into their school day.
